Chinedu Achebe-Author of Blunted on Reality

write your story for yourself and do not measure your success as an author only on how many books that you sell.

AG: Can we meet you? (Background, educational history, transition between growing up and becoming a writer)
CA: I was born in Richmond, Virginia. But I lived there for the first six years of life until my family located to various states until we settled in San Antonio, Texas. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Houston.  I currently live in Houston, Texas.  Since I lived in different places, I had a variety of different experiences.

AG: Is your Journey into writing by accident or have you always had the intention to one day write a book?
CA: I can honestly say that I never really knew that I would actually write a book. I never felt like I had anything to talk about until I started formulating the story-line around this book.

AG: What book/author most influence your life and why?
CA: I feel that I had various influences who were authors and non authors. In terms of authors, I would have to go with Chinua Achebe and his second book, No Longer At Ease.  My other influence would be the black American filmmaker, Spike Lee.

AG: Let’s talk about "Blunted on Reality", what is it all about?
CA: Blunted on Reality follows the life of Obi Ifeanyi, a Nigerian-American man in his late 20s, dealing with his career choices, family, and deciding between two women in his life, one of them is Tamika, his ex girlfriend from college and the other is Nkechi, his homegirl from law school. The story takes place the day after the 2008 presidential election victory of Barack Obama and covers the first year of his presidency.

AG: What do you want your readers to walk away with after reading the book?
CA: I want them to know that all the decisions we make in this world aren’t just black and white. Most of them time we operate in a gray area where it is hard to decide what is the right or wrong way to tackle a particular problem.

AG: Who edited and when did you finish writing?
CA: The book was edited by an independent company and it took me about one year to finish writing the story.

AG: As a debut writer, what challenges did you face while writing “Blunted on Reality”
CA: I guess like most writers I struggled with writers’ block and trying to transition from one chapter to another.

AG: What has journey been like since you published “Blunted on Reality”?
CA: It was been interesting. Since I self published, I have to do all the leg work to get my book reviewed by different reviewers and trying to get featured in various blogs and magazines. It was really been a true learning experience, but I have enjoyed the whole process.

AG: What is your most favorite and least favorite aspect of writing a book?
CA: My favorite aspect is just been able to tell the story the way I want. I don’t have a least favorite aspect of writing so far.

AG: What is the best writing advice you ever received and who was it from?
CA:  The best advice I received was from another writer who told me to just enjoy writing my book and don’t get caught up in whether all my readers will like my story or not.

AG: What is the most important part about a career to you?(Good work, money, security, life balance)?
CA: I think the most important part of a career is life balance so that you can enjoy the other aspects of your life and not just be consumed with only your work.

AG: Please share 3 tittles of books on your current reading list?
CA: Americanah by Chimamanda Adichie

Ghana Must Go by Taiye Selasi

There Was A Country by Chinua Achebe

AG: Favourite quote?
CA: “Life is too short, just live in and enjoy the current moment you are in.”

AG:  Any writing tips you would like to share?
CA: I would just tell any writer to just write your story for yourself and do not measure your success as an author only on how many books that you sell.
