On the Rise: the next big names of fashion styling in Africa

African fashion is finally taking its place on the world stage and fashion styling in African is also getting more appreciation and recognition in the industry. There is a new crop of stylists in the industry whose talents and creativity distinguishes them from the many lots who call themselves stylists nowadays
From styling today’s most recognizable celebrities, to fashion shows, editorials and photo shoot to personal styling, these stylists are making an impact on the fashion world and living their dreams behind the scene. We bring to you a few of African’s fashion stylists in no particular order:

South Africa-Funeka Ngwevela

Few African bloggers can put the Glamour woman of the year style icon award; Marie Claire Magazine sponsored street style award, one and a clothing line with South Africa’s fashion line, Mr Price in their brag bag. But Funeka Ngwevela aka the quirky stylista a fashion blogger and a 70s lover, is one with such bragging rights. Her trademark is the fro, Funeka share her quirky style with her readers on her blog: The Quirky Stylista

Nigeria-Adebayo Oke-Lawal

This young man is definitely one to watch out for in 2013 and years to come. He is the brain behind the fashion label, Orange Culture and one of 3 styling trio of the brand BUBBAI. He was also once part of Onyx & Pearl another fashion label where he styled Nigerian celebrities such as  Makida Moka, Tiwa Savage and Mo’ Cheddah. His works spans magazines such as WOW, FAB Magazine, the defunct 234next Elan and websites such as Y!Naija and 360Nobs. He has also styled in fashions shows such as Arise Fashion Week Lagos; Music meets Runway and the Lagos Fashion & Design week

Tanzania-Rio Paul

The 20 years old Tanzania who is currently studying International Relations and Diplomacy is one climbing the fashion ladder with fast strides. Rio Paul also know as Paul Peter has worked with celebrities such as Big Brother Africa’s Tatiana Durao and MTV Base VJ Vanessa Mdee. With major achievements such as styling Top Tanzanian designer fashion shows, to interning for Mustapha Hassanali, to organizing designer progress initiative, and also the launch of his summer collection “Joie De Vivre” at the Dar Fashion festival 2011. Rio Paul has not only become a brand name but also an inspiration to Tanzanian youths. Rio aims to provide sophistication, class and elegance with a suitable DNA of his clients.

Ghana-Dorothy Maathay-Osei

The Ghana born stylist has styled models for African designers such as Ariike Alden, Benny Bonsu, I am Couture. She was also involved in styling for “Rhythmz on Da Runway” fashion and music event held in Accra. She is also a personal shopper and has Ghanaian actress Jackie Appiah and Sanda Ankobia, host of Fashion 101 on her client list. Styling to Dorothy is about showcasing a true reflection of who you are.  Dorothy after a brief styling course with Faye Marriott, who has over 10 years exp working with Vogue, Marie Claire, Harper’s Bazaar and Esquire founded Style Check by Dee, a styling outfit which seeks to cater for ladies of all race.

Botswana-Gaone Mothini and Tsholo Dikobe

The self titled Fashion nerds are making sure Botswana is not left out of the Fashion map.   The duo live, walk, sleep, breathe and consume everything fashion. They also run a image consultancy firm under GaTsh Fros which offers services ranging from fashion styling to promotions They have gained accolades in and out of the country with magazine features in some of South Africa’s top magazines such Elle, Glamour and Marie Claire. In Botswana they publish fashion columns for Lapologa and the Voice.

Kenya-Nancie Mwai

Nancie is a young woman out to revolutionalize Kenya’s budding fashion industry. She is a personal stylist, blogger of the Fashion Notebook , Editor of Kenyan online fashion magazine Kasha and a stylist for Daily Nation. Nancie has been featured on top online magazines such as The Guardian (UK), FAB Magazine, MTV Style. She has also graced the cover of True Love East Africa and won the B.A.K.E (Bloggers Association of Kenya) award for best fashion blog in 2012. Nancie was also the face of Wambui Mukenyi from 2011 to 2012.

Ghana- Melissa Akposoe

Melissa is Ghana’s budding stylist who has been featured on in Look magazine, FAB Magazine, Marie Claire and Instyle for her impeccable fashion taste. Melissa who holds a degree in Criminology has also interned with Zekaryas Solomon who is a London based designer who made a name for himself by combining his fashion knowledge with his skill in architectural design. Nigeria- Ifeoma Odogwu

Gambia- Aysha Jones-Ceesay

The maiden edition Gambian Fashion week which was hosted in February was the brainchild of the Sweden based-Gambian fashion Stylist, Aysha Jones-Ceesay. Aysha is passionate about maintaining her Gambian roots and the event was solely to promote Gambia and African talents worldwide. Aysha has worked with famous Swedish photographers, dancers and artist, most notable on her client list is the Award winning Swedish actress, Haddy Jallow.
